Watchword for the Week

“Rejoice in the Lord, O you righteous, and give

thanks to his holy name!” (Psalm 97:12)

(Moravian Daily Texts 2013)

ORGAN PRELUDE

WELCOME and CALL to WORSHIP

(Verses from Psalm 97)

The Lord is king! Earth, be glad! Rejoice, you islands of the seas!

Clouds and darkness surround him; he rules with righteousness and justice.

Fire goes in front of him and burns up his enemies around him. His lightning lights up the world; the earth sees it and trembles.

The heavens proclaim his righteousness, and all the nations see his glory.

Lord Almighty, you are ruler of all the earth; you are much greater than all the gods;

you protect the lives of your people; you rescue them from the power of the wicked.

Light shines on the righteous, and gladness on the good.

Rejoice in the Lord, O you righteous, and give thanks to his holy name!

PRAYERS of APPROACH

Holy God, the heavens proclaim your glory:

May our voices do so, too.

Holy God, the mountains melt like wax before

you: May hardened hearts do so, too.

May we gather as your community, sculpted by the freedom of love and in the liberty of grace, that all may gather here and be given voice to proclaim you God of all the earth, and give thanks to your holy name. Hear us as we confess the times we have ignored others’ needs, leaving them without a voice to cry for justice,to cry for peace, to cry for truth.

May we share their silence in our confession.

[Pause]

We confess the times we have turned our backs on those who are too much trouble.

Hear us, Holy God.

We confess what we have taken for ourselves that which belongs to another.

Hear us, Holy God.

We confess the times we have chosen not to see others. Hear us, Holy God.

We confess the times we have lost our own voice because of fear of speaking the truth.

Hear us, Holy God.

We confess the times we have not been your disciples in seeking peace, and inclusion, and freedom.

Hear us, Holy God. Amen.

WORDS of ASSURANCE

God awakens us to his truth, encourages us in service, surprises us by hope, fills us with optimism and joy, and calls us to be practitioners of Christ’s Way in this place and beyond. Thanks be to God! Amen.

Hymn 771 If you believe and I believe

If you believe and I believe and we together pray, the Holy Spirit shall come down and set God’s people free, and set God’s people free, and set God’s people free; the Holy Spirit shall come down and set God’s people free.

DEDICATION PRAYER

We dedicate ourselves to another’s freedom, O God, to bring the fullness of life to those caught in life’s shadows: to offer grace where another’s hurt has bruised; to offer peace where another’s violence has damaged; to offer a heart where another’s story entraps; to offer justice where another’s power has oppressed. Amen.

NOTICES and PRAYERS for OTHERS

Lord, hear us: Lord, graciously hear us.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.
