Watchword for the Week

“Make me to know your ways, O Lord;

teach me your paths.” (Psalm 25:4)

(Moravian Daily Texts 2013)

(Verses from Psalm 82)

Rise up, O God, and judge the earth,

for all the nations are your inheritance.

God presides in the heavenly council; in the assembly of the gods he gives his decision:

You must stop judging unjustly; you must no longer be partial to the wicked.

Defend the rights of the poor and the orphans; be fair to the needy and helpless.

Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked.

Rise up, O God, and judge the earth,

for all the nations are your inheritance.

Let us give thanks for the generous people, the ones who give something of themselves, who willingly put their hands in their pockets first, offering to pay for our food and drink. Let us give thanks for the generous people, the ones that offer to hold open a door, carry our heavy bags, and cases, and expect nothing in return. Let us give thanks to the generous people, who notice when someone is in need, who take time to ask if everything is okay, and give of their time without thought of inconvenience. Let us give thanks to the generous people, the soup makers and the meal bringers, who, in times of bereavement or need, do the practical and the kindest things. Let us give thanks to the generous people and all the Good Samaritans in this community, who demonstrate love and compassion, mercy and justice, hope and forgiveness, so that your will is done. Amen.

Hymn 544 When I needed a neighbour

Holy God, hear our prayer and listen to our heart, open our eyes, and expand our minds, so that we may recognise the times when we have dishonoured you, by our selfish actions, and our black and white understanding of your Word and ways in the world. When I try to justify actionsthat are unjustifiable: forgive me, O God.

When I have turned your Word to my own advantage: forgive me, O God.

When I have opted to walk by on the other side to avoid something unpleasant: forgive me, O God.

When I have not cared for my neighbour: forgive me, O God.

When I have poured scorn on the people who are not like me: forgive me, O God.

When I fail to grasp your demands: forgive me, O God.

When I hide behind the rules, and choose to do the least rather than the best for you:forgive me, O God.

Holy God, grant me your peace, your forgiveness, your grace and mercy.

Holy God, I open my ears to hear your voice, I open my eyes to see your needs, I open my heart to experience your love. I open my mind to discern your Spirit, and I pray that I can live graciously and humbly, in your service. Amen.

To those who are penitent, Jesus says: Your sins are forgiven. Thanks be to God! Amen.

Hymn 604 Holy wisdom, lamp of learning

SERMON Rev. James Brown

Hymn 528 * Make me a channel of your peace

(Offerings are gathered and brought forward)

On the highways and byways, we will seek the fallen. On the roadways and pavements, we will seek the lost. In the nooks and crannies, we will seek the broken. And as we travel through the whole of life, we will cross over to the other side to be with the fallen, the lost and the broken. Amen.

Help us to stand up for what is right and fair.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.
