Watchword for the Week

“Be glad in the LORD and rejoice, O righteous, and shout for joy, all you upright in heart” (Psalm 32:11)

(Moravian Daily Texts 2014)

(Verses from Psalm 32)

Happy are those whose sins are forgiven, and whose wrongs are pardoned.

Happy are those whom the LORD does not accuse of doing wrong and who are free from all deceit.

When I did not confess my sins, I was worn out from crying all day long.

Day and night you punished me, LORD; my strength was completely drained, as moisture is dried up by the summer heat.

Then I confessed my sins to you; I did not conceal my wrongdoings.

I decided to confess them to you, and you forgave all my sins.

You are my hiding place; you will save me from trouble.

I sing aloud of your salvation, because you protect me.

You that are righteous, be glad and rejoice because of what the LORD has done.

You that obey him, shout for joy! Amen.

Creator God, it is you who have made us, and not we ourselves. We are dust without your breath of life. We are creatures, not Creator; yet you entrust the care of creation to us. Breathe your Spirit into us that we might be faithful in the tasks you set before us.

Creator God, you know us through and through, you know the many choices we face each day. We choose between right and wrong; we choose between greater and lesser evils; we choose what will be important to us in life. As you strengthened Jesus to choose rightly when he was tempted in the wilderness, so strengthen us, through your presence and Spirit, when we face temptation, so that we might walk in thepaths most pleasing to you.

The hatred which divides nation from nation, race from race, class from class,

Father, forgive.

The covetous desires of people and nations to possess what is not their own, Father, forgive.

The greed which exploits the work of human hands and lays waste the earth, Father, forgive.

Our envy of the welfare and happiness of others, Father, forgive.

Our indifference to the plight of the imprisoned, the homeless, the refugee, Father, forgive.

The lust which dishonours the bodies of men, women and children, Father, forgive.

The pride which leads us to trust in ourselves and not in God, Father, forgive.

Hymn 776 * Kyrie eleison [repeat ad lib]

Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.

Thanks be to God. Amen.

Hymn 807 * Doxology

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise him, all creatures here below; Praise him above, ye heavenly hosts; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

(Offerings are brought forward)

We offer ourselves with our gifts, confident that you have a purpose for them and for us. Expand our limited vision to embrace new possibilities. We rededicate our lives at this altar. May our offerings reach beyond the barriers of our former thinking and doing. In the Spirit of Christ we pray. Amen.

I have a reason to praise the Lord in my heart. He’s a miracle working God; he’s the Alpha and Omega, he’s a miracle working God. Alleluia.

Lord, in your mercy: hear our prayer.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not intotemptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

Hymn 465 * Be thou my Vision
